Mary Magdalen by rachels89 Mary Magdalen by rachels89
I felt like doing something biblical this week.

Used this photo by CathleenTarawhiti as reference for the hands and fabric: Vermilion 3
And I used this stock by MissSouls-stock as reference for the face: Snow 1

This image says a lot more than the picture itself. It's one of my favourite digital Art images and one I have to keep coming back to.

Beautiful picture, one of my favorites from your collection. At first glance I thought you used a photograph of yourself as a reference for the painting, which would have been a very interesting spiritual/theological reflection.

If I could bother you with two questions. When you create a digital picture do you draw it free hand or do you manipulate and edit the existing stock pictures together? Also, what is the main drawing program that you use?

As always, thank you for your art. I greatly appreciate the travel, Tolkien and now theological themes.

Thank you! In hindsight, it would have been a cool to do a self portrait as Mary Magdalen. Interesting idea ;)

I draw free hand. When I'm drawing/painting something digitally, I usually have the reference picture right next to the artwork so I can get the colors and shading just right. I use Photoshop and a Wacom Cintiq tablet.

Thank you very much for your kind compliments! I'm glad you enjoy my artwork.

I have been asked the same question about how I produce Digital Art.  As a photographer and an Artist I can't see the point in manipulating a photo to look like an Artwork. The Artwork has to come from the hand, eye, and imagination of the artist, not from a software programme.  I also draw freehand with a Graphics Tablet.
I also often use my original pencil drawings as a base and add colour and shading etc. in software.

I've tried using scans of original pencil drawings and coloring them digitally as well, but I feel like I can never make it look quite right. I have yet to master that technique :)

At the moment I tend to use it as a "Colouring in" exercise.  Sometimes it works for me and sometimes I don't seem to get what I want or what I am happy with. It's probably a lot to do with the subject matter.
